On the morning of May 24, 2025, a powerful propane explosion tore through a Florida City strip mall near the 900 block of W. Palm Drive, destroying multiple businesses, injuring at least 10 people, and sending shockwaves throughout the community. The source: a suspected gas leak ignited during the startup of kitchen appliances at Caribbean’s Heart, a local restaurant in the center of the blast.

Surveillance footage from inside Rainbow Smoke Shop, one of the adjacent businesses, captured the exact moment of the explosion. Glass shattered, ceilings caved in, and the store was left in ruins.

Coffey McPharlin Files Lawsuit on Behalf of Business Owner

Coffey McPharlin is representing Rainbow Novelty, Inc., the owners of Rainbow Smoke Shop, in a negligence lawsuit against Florigas, Inc., the propane supplier involved in the incident. The suit, filed in Miami-Dade County, also calls into question the role of a subcontractor identified as Anel Costatrueba Company or, in the alternative, Radiant Propane & Gas, Radiant Oil and Gas Company of Florida, Inc., and/or Radiant Oil Company, a company with no verifiable licensing or digital footprint.

What Does the Lawsuit Allege?

The lawsuit filed by Coffey McPharlin claims:

• Failure to perform mandatory leak testing and system safety checks
• Improper ignition of propane-fueled appliances without ensuring adequate ventilation
• Negligent hiring and supervision of unlicensed subcontractors
• Breach of non-delegable duty by Florigas, which cannot be outsourced or avoided under Florida law

As a result of this alleged negligence, the smoke shop was destroyed, and the owner, along with two employees, suffered physical and emotional trauma, including second-degree burns and long-term financial loss.
